Visitors are welcome at all UGA Libraries locations during daytime business hours. After 9 p.m., access to the Main Library and the McBay Science Library is limited to the UGA community (faculty, staff, students) and students with a valid higher education ID.

UGA graduates may request borrowing privileges with the UGA Libraries. The UGA Libraries require verification of alumni status from the UGA Alumni Association to extend library privileges. Once verified, Alumni will receive an outside borrower's card from the UGA Libraries. This library card and a picture ID are required to borrow materials from the Libraries.

A valid UGA Alumni Card is proof of alumni status and no further verification is necessary from the UGA Alumni Association. However, a UGA Alumni Card is not required to receive borrowing privileges with the UGA Libraries.

Loan Periods - The loan period is 28 days. The Leisure Collection circulates for 14 days. Alumni are allowed to borrow 5 books at a time. As soon as a book is returned, another may be borrowed. The borrower is responsible for all items checked out in his/her name until those items are discharged and cleared from the library account. Books may be recalled by other library patrons. The loan period of recalled items is shortened and the items cannot be renewed.

Renewals - 2 automatic renewals for most items. After the 2 automatic renewals, books may be brought to the Circulation Desks at Science, Main or the CML to be discharged and borrowed again. There is no limit on the number of times an item may be borrowed as long as no one else has requested it.

Recall Fines and Damaged/Lost Items - Recall overdue fines are $1 per day. Books are marked Lost after being overdue for 56 days. A patron who loses an item is responsible for reimbursing the Libraries for the replacement cost and the processing fee ($35 per book). The cost of repair or replacement of damaged items will be assessed by library staff and billed to the borrower.

Payments - Payment may be made in person at the Main and Science Libraries' circulation desks with cash, check, or credit card. Payments may also be made via telephone with a credit card or by mail with a check or money order paid to the order of UGA Libraries. Failure to pay outstanding fines or other obligations may result in the suspension of library privileges.

Notices - Courtesy notices, overdue notices, lost/replacement bills, recall overdue notices and recall fine bills are sent by email. These notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice does not absolve the borrower from responsibility for recall fines, replacement costs, and processing fees. Outstanding charges or other obligations may result in the suspension of library privileges. Updating a patron's address with any other department of the University does not automatically update the Libraries' records. Please notify the Access Services Department of address changes.

Alumni library privileges do not entitle the borrower to library services such as Interlibrary Loan, Course Reserves, or other restricted Libraries collections. Due to licensing agreements and vendor restrictions, Alumni borrowers do not have remote access to GALILEO through the University of Georgia. Alumni who are also residents of Georgia should contact their local public library for GALILEO access information.
