Three map and plat collections featuring historical maps, plats, deeds, records, and correspondence pertaining to South Georgia land holdings dating from 1767 to 1899 are now available in the Digital Library of Georgia.

These resources belong to Valdosta State University Archives. They have been made available online thanks in part to the DLG's Competitive Digitization grant program, a funding opportunity intended to broaden DLG partner participation for statewide historic digitization projects.

The UGA Libraries is hosting a spring series of Graduate Research Workshops designed to help graduate students succeed at UGA and beyond.

The Georgia Writers Hall of Fame will begin celebrations of its 20th anniversary with a reading of inductee Philip Lee Williams’ 20th novel.

Williams’ book launch event is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, the acclaimed writer’s 70th birthday, at the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries at the University of Georgia.

The University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will pay homage to the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage this spring. An exhibit entitled The Strategies for Suffrage: Mobilizing a Nation for Women’s Rights opens at the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries on Jan. 17.

The exhibit, curated by Sidonia Serafini, a doctoral student in UGA’s department of English in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, explores the nearly century-long story of how women secured enfranchisement and campaigned for women’s civil rights in the United States.

Author Colleen Oakley will return to her alma mater to read from her latest novel.

The book event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the University of Georgia’s Miller Learning Center. Sponsored by UGA’s Libraries, the event is free and open to the public, and a light reception will follow.

Oakley’s latest novel, You Were There Too, is one of O Magazine’s Top 22 Romance Books of 2020, a Publisher’s Weekly Starred Review and a Library Reads January 2020 pick. Oakley will read from the book and sign copies afterward.

The latest issue of The Georgia Review, Winter 2019, is now available for purchase. Featuring 250 pages of original poetry, fiction, essays, and book reviews, some of the issue’s highlights include a tribute to the late Toni Morrison, an innovative poetry project presenting the words of Hong Kong protesters, a new story by novelist Tiphanie Yanique, an essay by conservationist Susan Cerulean, and an art folio of work by Atlanta-based artist Michi Meko. The Winter issue is the first curated by new editor-in-chief Gerald Maa, who took leadership of the Review after the July retirement of longtime editor Stephen Corey.

With a librarian’s help, Isabell Ott’s research project grew exponentially into a complete history of an understudied group of viruses comprised of 300 sources of information. Jeri Sasser learned sophisticated methods for an extensive literature search that are key to her new adventures in graduate school, and Lauren Boyd discovered new sources and new ways of thinking critically that lead to summer field research in Baja Big Sur, Mexico.

These three students are just a few examples of the influence that the UGA Libraries Undergraduate Research Award has had on students in the past year.

Since 2007, the Libraries’ Undergraduate Research Award (LURA) has encouraged and

rewarded research excellence and growth as a scholar.
