Handling Map and Government Information Library Materials

  • In-house use only materials
    • The following items may not be taken out of the Map and Government Information Library:
      • maps
      • air photos
      • reference materials
      • folios and flat folios
      • city directories
      • any government document that does not circulate

  • Damaged materials
    • Please bring all damaged materials to the attention of a Map and Government Information Library staff member. Do not attempt to repair damaged items yourself.

  • Encapsulated maps
    • Brittle or damaged maps may be encapsulated in a clear Mylar sleeve for protection and preservation. Please do not remove such maps from their protective Mylar sleeves.

  • Erasing
    • Please bring all marked or stained materials to the attention of a Map and Government Information Library staff member. Most marks or stains can be erased or removed with preservation-quality erasers or cleaners. Do not attempt to erase or clean marked or stained items yourself.

  • Folding maps
    • Some maps must be folded to fit into the map cases. As all folds create weak spots that can lead to tears, please do not make new folds in our maps. If you are not sure how or whether to fold a map, please ask a Map and Government Information Library staff member for assistance.

  • Marking
    • Do not mark or write on Map and Government Information Library materials with any writing instrument, including pencil.

  • Removable tape on materials
    • Careful use of removable tape or Post-it notes is permitted as long as it does not damage the material. Please do not use removable tape or Post-it notes on brittle or damaged items. If you are not sure of the condition of an item, please ask a Map and Government Information Library staff member for assistance.

  • Table use
    • Large work tables are available for patrons to work with maps and other materials in the Map and Government Information Library. To avoid creasing or damaging maps, please do not drape them over the edge of the table.
