UGA Athletics Materials on Tour

Submitted by Jan Hebbard on

athletics graphic The University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library will be hitting the road this summer with a traveling exhibit of materials from the UGA Athletic Association Archive.  Jason Hasty, UGA Athletics History Specialist for the Hargrett Library, will bring historic materials to several public libraries in east and central Georgia.“This is a great chance for everyone to see materials – uniforms, equipment, photographs –  that represent UGA’s rich athletics heritage”, said Hasty.  “I’m especially excited that this travelling exhibit will feature a mix of older artifacts as well as some items donated from our recent student-athletes and teams.”

Kanopy Changes

Submitted by Kristin on

Beginning Monday, May 13, most Kanopy streaming videos will need to be requested before viewing.

Previously, UGA users were able to view many films on the Kanopy site simply by opening them. After a film received a small number of views – no matter how brief – the UGA Libraries had to pay a substantial annual license fee for that film. As use has increased, our costs have risen sharply to the point that we can no longer afford to offer unmediated access.  While moving to request-based (mediated) access may not be as convenient, we are making this change to enable us to continue to provide access to Kanopy films but in a more sustainable way.

Intermittent Google Scholar access problems

Submitted by deborah on

UGA users are having intermittent problems accessing Google Scholar. The Google Scholar search box on our homepage directs all Google Scholar searches through our proxy server, so that it recognizes you are coming from UGA and shows you links to full text articles provided by UGA Libraries. Unfortunately, in some cases Google Scholar is blocking these searches and displaying an " Invalid domain for site key" error message. You may also experience it if you start at https://scholar.google.com, rather than the Libraries homepage.

This problem is being experienced by other libraries as well. We believe it's a Google Scholar problem, but we are continuing to try to find a solution.

There are a couple of options you can try, which might work to get you in:

Option 1: Add our institutional ID to your search:

First, close your browser window and start a new session.

Science Library's Makerspace Contributes 3D-Printed Personal Protective Equipment to Hospitals

Submitted by amywatts on

The Science Library's Makerspace staff is contributing to the University of Georgia's efforts to produce medical face shields for Athens-area medical professionals at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Health Care System.

Andrew Johnson, an emerging technologies librarian, reached out to faculty and staff with 3D printers to let them know about the initiative. He was able to borrow printers from across campus – including the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Entrepreneurship Program in the Terry College of Business, and the Innovation Gateway in the Office of Research – to combine with the 3D printers at the Makerspace and create a fabrication hub. Makerspace associate Ariel Ackerly calibrated the equipment and set up the Makerspace for scaled-up PPE production. Ackerly and Johnson anticipate being able to 3D print between 80-100 headbands per week.
