UGA Libraries Serving Students, Faculty Online and In Person Through End of Fall Semester

Students and faculty in the University of Georgia community can continue to take advantage of library services after the Thanksgiving transition to online classes, whether in Athens or at home in another state.

In addition to online resources and virtual consultations with librarians and archivists, library facilities, including the Miller Learning Center, will remain available to students, faculty, staff, and the community through the remainder of the year and into the spring semester.

Data Visualization Workshops Offered By DigiLab

The Digital Humanities Lab will host a series of virtual workshops to introduce a number of methods for visualizing data and will introduce the concepts using web tools, Excel, Tableau, and R.

These sessions are open to undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline and are intended for beginners. No experience necessary. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 4 via Zoom. To register, contact digi@uga.edu.

Special Prize Offered to Students in Libraries’ Capturing Science Contest

The UGA Libraries invites students to compete in the Fourth Annual Capturing Science Contest. The competition, co-sponsored by the Office of Research, offers cash prizes for students who convey STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts in creative and compelling projects that range from artistic endeavors to classroom activities, games and videos. The deadline for virtual submissions is 5 p.m. Dec. 7, 2020.

Libraries’ Makerspace Equipment Available Via Reservation This Fall

Labs at UGA Libraries offer opportunities for students and faculty to put the knowledge to use via technology such as 3D printers and GIS software, while maintaining a safe social distance.

The Makerspace at the Science Library has adapted policies to lessen the spread of COVID-19, allowing up to two patrons at a time to use 3D printer and laser cutting equipment. While walk-in use will be allowed at times when space is available, a reservation system allows students and faculty members to schedule their work.

New Web Tool Helps Students Find a Spot to Study

A new online app can help UGA students find a place to study on campus.

The mapping tool, which includes indoor and outdoor locations, is intended to help students find areas to practice safe social distancing while they study. Initiated by the Office of Instruction, partners on the project included the Office of the University Architects, UGA Libraries, the Office of Sustainability and the Facilities Management Division.

Libraries Offer Virtual Orientation Sessions for Graduate Students to Learn about Services

UGA graduate students can meet their subject specialist librarian and learn more about resources and services that can aid in the academic journey through virtual orientation sessions offered this August.

UGA Libraries’ research and instruction librarians will conduct sessions via Zoom beginning Monday, Aug. 17. The one-hour orientations will introduce students to offerings, including citation managers, and teach how to search databases.
