At UGA Libraries, we ask that students and patrons remain curious and courteous, as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

All staff and visitors are required to wear masks, in accordance with the University System of Georgia policy in place since the buildings reopened in summer 2020. This includes all open study areas and group studying at the Main Library, Science Library, Miller Learning Center, Carnegie Library, Special Collections Libraries, and branch locations for art, music, and curriculum materials.

Security staff regularly monitor study locations for mask usage and will ask repeat violators to leave if they are found to be noncompliant.

Before Fatoumata Toure entered kindergarten, she learned a hard lesson about the importance of fresh drinking water. Now as a college freshman, she has earned the top prize in the Capturing Science Contest, sponsored by the University of Georgia Libraries and the Office of Research, for making an informative and innovative video to explain the science behind the concerns.

Toure, a North Cobb High School graduate who intends to major in environmental engineering, received the top prize of $1,000, as well as a special bonus prize of $200 for this year’s contest for integrating research related to social justice in her piece.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of desegregation at the University of Georgia, the University of Georgia Press, the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Mary Frances Early College of Education announce a Campus Read of An Education in Georgia: Charlayne Hun

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of the University of Georgia, the Main Library at UGA is hosting an exhibit that chronicles the historic events of 1961, when Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter (now Hunter-Gault) became the first African American students admitted to the university.

Honored guests, including the Holmes family and members of the UGA Black Alumni Council, were among the first to tour the exhibit, entitled Georgia Trailblazers: Honoring the 60th Anniversary of Desegregation at UGA, on the day it opened, Jan. 9, 2021, the 60^th anniversary of Holmes’ and Hunter’s enrollment.

GIL Express requesting has been suspended for the winter break from 12/14/2020 through 1/3/2021. The GIL Express service will resume on Monday, 1/4/2021.

Historical aerial photography indexes that chronicle changing land use in all of Georgia’s 159 counties from the 1930s to 1990s are now available freely online.

UGA Libraries will continue to provide course reserve services for faculty planning their courses for spring semester, with some changes due to the continuing COVID-19 situation. Requests submitted by December 11 are guaranteed to be completed and accessible by the first day of Spring Semester classes, January 13.

Students and faculty in the University of Georgia community can continue to take advantage of library services after the Thanksgiving transition to online classes, whether in Athens or at home in another state.

In addition to online resources and virtual consultations with librarians and archivists, library facilities, including the Miller Learning Center, will remain available to students, faculty, staff, and the community through the remainder of the year and into the spring semester.

The University of Georgia and University of Florida might be rivals on the football field, but they are partners in providing public access to government information.

UGA Libraries and the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida have been designated as a shared regional depository library by the U.S. Government Publishing Office, a move that modernizes efforts to provide access to government reports by allowing libraries to tailor their resources to meet their patrons needs while collaborating to maintain access to comprehensive collections.

The University of Georgia Libraries and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite full-time UGA faculty from all disciplines to apply to participate in the 2021 Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows program.

Now in its sixth year, the program brings together a select group of UGA faculty to explore archives-based learning as a high-impact learning practice through intensive workshops with specialists from the University’s three special collections units and representatives from the Center for Teaching and Learning.
