Congress Week 2022: Checks in the Balance

As part of its annual Congress Week celebration, the Russell Library along with co-sponsors the Department of Political Science and the Applied Politics Certificate program are hosting Alexander Bolton and Sharece Thrower to discuss their new book Checks in the Balance: Legislative Capacity and the Dynamics of Executive Power.

Panel: Kudzu and the Boll Weevil in Modern Georgia

Join the Russell Library for a panel featuring Drs. James C. Giesen, Associate Professor of History and Grisham Master Teacher, Mississippi State University, and Derek Alderman, Professor of Geography, University of Tennessee. Discussion will include the social, cultural, and economic impact of notorious pests such as the boll weevil and kudzu in modern Georgia. Dr. Brian Drake, Senior Lecturer, Department of History, University of Georgia, will moderate the event. 

About the speakers:

Inaugural Food, Power and Politics Lecture: Dr. Marion Nestle

Dr. Marion Nestle is the Paulette Goddard Professor Emerita of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. She is also a consumer advocate, nutritionist and author of six award-winning books. Nestle’s research examines scientific and socioeconomic influences on food choice, obesity and food safety, with an emphasis on the role of food marketing. Among her recent honors are the John Dewey Award for Distinguished Public Service from Bard College and the Public Health Hero Award from the University of California School of Public Health at Berkeley.
