The Science Library's Makerspace staff is contributing to the University of Georgia's efforts to produce medical face shields for Athens-area medical professionals at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Health Care System. 

Andrew Johnson, an emerging technologies librarian, reached out to faculty and staff with 3D printers to let them know about the initiative. He was able to borrow printers from across campus – including the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Entrepreneurship Program in the Terry College of Business, and the Innovation Gateway in the Office of Research – to combine with the 3D printers at the Makerspace and create a fabrication hub. Makerspace associate Ariel Ackerly calibrated the equipment and set up the Makerspace for scaled-up PPE production. Ackerly and Johnson anticipate being able to 3D print between 80-100 headbands per week.

The UGA campus will not have internet for most of the day on Saturday, March 9th.

At the Special Collections Libraries, this means we will not be able to provide access to materials. If you would like to view materials on Saturday, please contact us sclib@uga.edu or 706-542-7123 by 12pm on Friday, March 8th.

For the other campus Libraries, this means that you will not be able to login to our computers, and our systems (e.g., websites and other resources) will be inaccessible. You will still be able to check out books.

Winners of the second annual Capturing Science Contest, which challenges UGA students to communicate STEM concepts using any media or genre, have been announced.

A variety of disciplines were represented in the 36 submissions covering STEM concepts. Students submitted games, videos, poetry, art, illustrations, photography, interactive activities and displays, educational guides, a podcast, and other media. Entries were evaluated by judges according to the following criteria: clarity of expression, creativity, and appeal to a broad audience.

The Main and Science Libraries hours for Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

The Provost's Office is offering the newly created Affordable Course Materials Grants program to encourage the adoption of free and low cost course materials. Faculty will have the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 grant to develop an Open Education Resource (OER). The Grants program is administered by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the UGA Libraries, and invite faculty applications by February 20, 2019.

The Libraries resume their regular semester hours on Wednesday, January 9 with the beginning of Spring Semester. 

Due to the weather, the Science Library and the Miller Learning Center will both be closing at 2:00 a.m. tonight (technically, Tuesday morning). They will reopen at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. 

The Libraries will operate with shortened hours for the Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving Break hours for the Main and Science Libraries are:

• Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 20 - 8am to 6pm
• Wednesday, November 21 - 8am to 5pm
• Thursday, November 22 - CLOSED
• Friday, November 23 - 12pm to 6pm

On Saturday, November 24, the Libraries will be closed for the home football game - UGA vs. GA Tech. The outside book drop at the Main Library will be locked.

The Libraries will resume their regular Fall semester hours on Sunday, November 25.
