 GIL Express online requesting will not be available from December 16, 2019 through January 1, 2020. Service will resume on January 2, 2020.

University of Georgia Libraries’ books will soon transcend shelves and be available online to students, faculty and members of the community in Athens and around the world.

Through a new partnership with Google, about 120,000 of the Libraries’ 4.5 million volumes will be digitized, allowing further access to literary, historic, scientific and reference books and journals through UGA’s library catalog as well as one of the largest digital book collections in the world.

“The University of Georgia Libraries’ collection of 4.5 million volumes is a vast resource for students and scholars at our campuses, and the Google Books partnership extends those benefits to people across the globe,” University Librarian and Associate Provost Toby Graham said. “The ability to search through the full text of these digitized materials will make it even easier for researchers to gain access to the knowledge that helps them to better understand our world.”

Pat Mitchell, a renowned journalist who broke barriers as the first female president of PBS and the first president of CNN Productions, will discuss her career at an event launching her new book, hosted by the University of Georgia Libraries.

 A traveling exhibition from the International Board of Books for Young People of wordless picture books from around the world is currently on display in the CML. The display is from now until late afternoon of April 18th. The books are non-circulating, but may be viewed in the CML. Please stop by to see this charming & enlightening display of books from 20 countries. No translation needed!

As part of the University of Georgia’s response to the COVID-19 situation, UGA Libraries have extended due dates for books and other materials checked out from the Libraries.

The extended due date for items in the Libraries’ collection is July 1.

For materials checked out through Inter-Library Loan, contact borrow@uga.edu.

Students who return to campus to retrieve their belongings may return their books via the drive-thru book drop in the Main Library parking lot, but this is NOT required.

All Libraries facilities will remain closed until further notice, but online resources and help are available. For more information, visit libs.uga.edu.

The UGA Libraries host award-winning author Tayari Jones Feb. 7 in celebration of the paperback launch of An American Marriage. Jones was a 2018 inductee into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, but was unable to attend the fall ceremony.  The award will be presented at this event, which is co-sponsored by Avid Bookshop.

The program is from 7-9 p.m. at the Foundry Ballroom (295 E. Dougherty Street, Athens, GA 30606). Tickets are $22 and include a paperback copy of either An American Marriage or Silver Sparrow. Books will be distributed upon check-in to the event.

An American Marriage was selected for the The New York Times' and The Washington Post's Most Notable of 2018 lists and was named 2018 Book of the Year by Apple Books. TIME Magazine selected it as the 2018 Best Fiction of the Year

The 2018 Lillian Smith Book Awards were presented Sunday, Sept. 2, to James Forman Jr and Nancy MacLean at the Decatur Book Festival. 

Forman’s Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America examines how mass incarceration, which affects people of color disproportionately, stems from the war on crime that began in the 1970s and was supported by many African American leaders in the nation’s urban centers. Summer Reading Lists for Local Schools matches the lists with what the Libraries own. The Curriculum Materials Library is in 207 Aderhold Hall and in addition to the titles on the lists we have thousands of other books, from board books for babies to Young Adult lit, which includes a lot of recent movies (The Fault in Our Stars, Everything, Everything, The Hunger Games, Twilight and, of course, Harry Potter for example) so we have something for everyone. And puppets. And fake food. :-)

Get your GIL Express requests in now!

The GIL Express service will be on hiatus from May 5 through May 26 during the transition to the new library system. While GIL Express is unavailable, please use Interlibrary Loan to get books from other USG libraries.
