UGA RefWorks Access Discontinuing

Submitted by Chandler Christoffel on

UGA Libraries will be discontinuing its RefWorks license for all UGA users on August 31, 2026.

RefWorks users will have several options:

  • They can migrate to a different citation management tool, including Zotero and Endnote. Zotero is a free, open-source option, and Endnote is a tool that UGA Libraries licenses for all campus users. While there are a variety of citation management tools to pick from, UGA Librarians provide training and migration assistance for Endnote and Zotero.

  • Users who want to keep their RefWorks account can purchase a personal subscription at a discounted rate after our institutional license expires.

Have questions or need help?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which citation management tool should I use?

In addition to Endnote and Zotero, for which we can provide training and assistance, there are a variety of other available citation management tools. Please check out our comparison charts to review these tools by features and/or tasks.

How do I migrate to another citation management tool like Endnote or Zotero?

To migrate to another tool, you will first want to export your references from RefWorks. You can then import these references into tools like Endnote or Zotero.

Will RefWorks references be linked to their attachment (e.g., article PDFs) when I migrate to another citation manager?

Citations and attachments will need to be exported separately.

Can I migrate my folder structure?

No, you will need to export .RIS files a folder at a time.

Does exporting references from RefWorks delete them from my account?

No, exporting from RefWorks does not delete them.

What will happen to my RefWorks data and account after August 31, 2026?

Your RefWorks data is stored for 120 days after August 31, 2026. All accounts will be purged after 120 days as well.

Can I store my RefWorks files in DropBox?

You can easily use DropBox sync to copy your reference files into Dropbox. The citation and attachment files will not be linked.

To convert from RefWorks Write-n-Cite to Endnote CWYC (Cite While You Write), please follow these steps.
