Established in 1995, the Walter J. Brown Media Archive & Peabody Awards Collection preserves over 350,000 physical items in film, video, audiotape, transcription disks, and other recording formats dating from the 1920s to the present as well as a petabyte of digital content from analog to digital transfers and born digital collections. The archives are housed in the Special Collections Libraries building in the northwest part of the University of Georgia campus.
The mission of the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection is to preserve and protect the moving image and sound materials that reflect the collective memory of broadcasting and the history of the State of Georgia and its people. Providing access to the collections through online viewing/listening and the creation and development of ongoing public programming that serves the research and study needs of the University of Georgia, its faculty and students, as well as the campus community and the public at large. The Media Archive's scope of service extends beyond the University of Georgia, providing reference assistance to researchers around the world, as well as participating in cooperative preservation projects with other moving image and sound archives.
